How to Store Coffee & Keep It Fresh

Coffee is at its best in the weeks after roasting, then slowly fades as it faces its four enemies: air, moisture, heat and light. A little care keeps every bag tasting the way it should.

The four rules

  • Airtight — oxygen is the main culprit. Keep coffee sealed in its bag (ours have a one-way valve) or in an airtight container.
  • Cool and dark — a cupboard away from the oven, kettle and sunlight is ideal.
  • Dry — moisture ruins coffee, which is why the fridge and freezer are a bad idea for an opened bag: condensation forms every time you take it out.
  • Whole beans — ground coffee stales far faster than whole beans because so much more surface area is exposed to air. Grind just before you brew for the biggest jump in flavour.

How long does it last?

For peak flavour, enjoy your coffee within a few weeks of opening. It won't be unsafe after that — just progressively less vibrant. Buying little and often beats stockpiling. All our coffee is roasted in small batches in the UK and dispatched fresh, so it reaches you in great condition.
