Blend vs Single Origin

Two of the most useful words on a coffee bag — and knowing the difference helps you choose the right coffee for how you drink.

What's the difference?

A blend combines beans from two or more origins, chosen and roasted to create a consistent, balanced flavour that stays the same all year round. A single origin comes from one place — one country, region or even a single farm — and showcases the distinct character of that terroir, which changes with the seasons.

Which suits which brew?

Blends are built for body, sweetness and crema, making them the natural choice for high-pressure and milk-based brewing — espresso machines, Moka pots and AeroPress. Their balance cuts through milk beautifully.

Single origins are lighter, brighter and more aromatic, and shine in gravity and filter brewing — the Hario V60, Chemex, Kalita Wave and Fellow Stagg — where clarity and delicate flavours come through. Drink them black to appreciate the origin's fruit, florals and acidity.

Which is better?

Neither — it's about what you're after. A dependable everyday cup for the espresso machine? Reach for a blend. A flavour adventure to explore black? Choose a single origin. Many of our customers keep one of each. Our brew guides note which style suits each method.
