How to brew

The Hario Switch is a V60 cone fitted with a steel ball valve and a manual lever at the base. Flick the switch up and the valve closes for full immersion steeping; press it down and the valve opens for instant pour-over drawdown. That lets you combine the body and sweetness of an immersion brew with the clean, bright acidity of a percolation — in a single device.

Step by step (hybrid method)

  1. Insert a V60 paper filter and rinse it with the valve open, then close the switch valve.
  2. Percolation phase: open the valve, add 20g of coffee and pour 150g of water in spirals, brewing like a classic V60 to draw out bright acids and aromatics.
  3. Immersion phase: at 1:00, close the valve and pour the remaining 150g of near-boiling water into the slurry. Let it steep in full immersion for one minute.
  4. Release: at 2:00, press the lever down to open the valve and let the brew draw down completely into your cup.

Adjust the balance to taste: more time in immersion builds body and sweetness, while a longer percolation phase brightens and lightens the cup.

Troubleshooting

  • Sour or thin? Grind finer, brew hotter, or lengthen the immersion phase.
  • Bitter or harsh? Grind coarser, cool the water slightly, or shorten the immersion.
  • Draining too slowly on release? Grind a touch coarser.
  • Want more body? Spend more of the brew with the valve closed (immersion); want more clarity, spend more open (percolation).
