Anti-static
Static, cancelled at the source
Grinding generates a charge, and that charge is what makes grounds cling to the chute, chaff scatter across the bench and the dose clump in the cup. The Ion Beam emits a steady stream of positive and negative ions across the grind path, neutralising the charge as it forms rather than trying to clean up after it.
Engineering
Industrial-grade ionisation, not a gimmick
Acaia specifies an industrial-grade ion generator, the same class of component used to control static in electronics assembly, packed into a 42mm barrel. Bluetooth 5.0 links it to the Acaia app for battery monitoring and settings, so you can see its state rather than guess at it.
Daily use
It turns itself on
An infrared motion sensor watches for a dosing cup or portafilter approaching and fires the ioniser automatically. Nothing to press mid-workflow, and nothing left running when the bench is clear. A 780mAh lithium-ion cell gives around 8 hours of continuous use, recharged over USB-C.
Mounting
On the Orbit, or anywhere else
The supplied L-shaped bracket mounts it directly to the Acaia Orbit, and a standard 1/4-inch-20 thread underneath fits any camera tripod or arm, so it works alongside a grinder of any brand. The whole thing is 115g of polycarbonate and carries a 2-year UK warranty. Tripod not included.

Frequently asked questions
Which grinders does the Acaia Ion Beam work with?
Any of them. The Ion Beam is not tied to a particular grinder: the supplied L-shaped bracket mounts it to the Acaia Orbit, and the 1/4-inch-20 thread on its base fits any standard camera tripod or bench arm, so it can sit alongside a grinder of any brand. You just need the ion emitter pointing at the point where the grounds leave the chute.
How does the Ion Beam stop static?
Coffee picks up an electrostatic charge as it passes between the burrs, and that charge is what makes grounds stick to the chute, throw chaff around and clump in the cup. The Ion Beam's ion generator emits a stream of positive and negative ions across that path, which cancels the charge as it forms. The result is less retention, less scattered chaff and a more evenly distributed dose.
Do I still need to spritz my beans (RDT) with the Ion Beam?
No. The Ross Droplet Technique works by adding a small amount of moisture to the beans so the charge dissipates; the Ion Beam addresses the same problem electrically instead, without introducing water to your beans or your burr chamber. Most people who fit one stop spritzing.
How long does the battery last, and how do I charge it?
Acaia rates the 3.7V 780mAh lithium-ion cell at around 8 hours of continuous use, which is comfortably a full day of home brewing or a busy service. It charges over USB Type-C using the supplied cable, and Bluetooth 5.0 lets the Acaia app report the remaining battery level. Keep the charging port dry and clear the emitter tip with the supplied brush rather than washing it.
Is a tripod included with the Ion Beam?
No. The box contains the Ion Beam, an L-shaped mount, a cleaning brush and a USB Type-C cable. The tripod shown in some product photography is not supplied, but the base carries a standard 1/4-inch-20 thread, so any camera tripod, mini tripod or magic-arm mount will fit.
- Industrial-grade ion generator floods the grind path with charged ions, cancelling the static that causes retention, clumping and flying chaff
- Infrared motion sensor fires the ioniser the moment you bring a dosing cup near it — nothing to switch on mid-workflow
- 8 hours of continuous runtime from a 780mAh lithium-ion cell, recharged over USB-C
- Mounts on the Acaia Orbit with the supplied L-shaped bracket, or stands anywhere on its 1/4"-20 tripod thread
- 115g, 127mm polycarbonate body with Bluetooth 5.0 for battery monitoring in the Acaia app, 2-year warranty
- Free UK delivery over £100, next-day available
Static is the quiet tax on single-dosing: grounds cling to the chute, chaff scatters across the bench, and the dose you weighed isn't the dose you brewed. The Acaia Ion Beam neutralises it at the point it forms, so grounds fall clean into the cup and retention drops — without spritzing your beans first.
